Volunteer Information

Trek Across Maine wouldn’t be possible without the commitment of our volunteers. Volunteer opportunities are available throughout Trek weekend.

The Right Volunteer Opportunities for You

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us! We are looking forward to our 41st Annual Trek Across Maine on June 13-15, 2025. This event would not be possible without our dedicated volunteers. Listed below are the volunteer task descriptions, frequently asked questions, and additional resources.

Have questions or need more information?
Please contact Emily Lewis: Emily.lewis@lung.org or 207-624-0326.

When volunteering at a rest stop, you will support in the setup, service, and take down of the rest stop for the weekend. This includes set up and placement of tables, food and beverages, assistance with safety of entrance and exit locations, supporting and cheering on riders, as well as clean up and takedown of the rest stop at the end of each day.

Please drive directly to your assigned rest stop location on your first scheduled day of volunteering and report to your volunteer lead to receive your t-shirt, name badge, meal bracelet and additional details regarding your assignment. Please see the rest stop schedule for exact locations and times of your assignment.

Volunteers will be positioned at the entrance to the finish line, bike storage, and other key areas at each fixed facility. The Facility Safety Crew will direct vehicles and participants in the appropriate direction to ensure the safety of pedestrians, volunteers and cyclists. Key areas include:

  • Finish Line Entrance
  • Bike Corral
  • Chute Directors
  • Parking Lot Entrances and Intersections

Your specific assignment and timing will be shared with you prior to Trek weekend.

Luggage crew volunteers support by loading and unloading luggage daily on their assigned box truck. The luggage driver will transport luggage in their truck to and from each overnight facility. Drivers have been asked to assist with loading and unloading. Luggage shifts start at 5am and finish in the early afternoon. Please note Luggage bags are heavy. Some lifting (up to 25lbs) is required.

Route marshal volunteers will be assigned to monitor an intersection along the Trek route to provide directional guidance to cyclists (turn or continue straight) and to remind them to stop or yield (following all traffic laws). You are ONLY to interact with cyclist traffic; you will NOT be directing vehicular traffic. Some intersections may be supported by police. If your intersection happens also to have an officer on duty, they will focus on the vehicular traffic while you focus on the cyclists. Please work in conjunction with the officer to keep things moving smoothly.

You will report directly to your assigned intersection on the first day of your assignment. Your lead volunteer will drop off your safety vest, signs, and lunches for your assignment.

SAG drivers will drive and monitor a specific section of the Trek route each day. A Ham Radio Operator will be assigned to ride with you and to provide communication with other SAG vehicles, rest stops, medical support, and the finish line.

SAG vehicles will be equipped with a bike rack to transport cyclists and their bike forward to the next rest stop for mechanical or medical assistance as needed. When volunteering as a SAG driver your shift is from 6:30a- 4p each day.

Shuttle drivers will transport Trekkers, volunteers, and luggage to and from locations both on campus and off campus on predetermined shuttle routes. You will receive scheduling and route information from your lead volunteer and Trek staff before event weekend.

You will be riding, observing, and educating cyclists about the “Rules of the Road” during the Trek ride. This includes informing Trekkers of inappropriate behaviors and the consequences to other cyclists, assisting if another cyclist is in distress and reporting any inappropriate cyclist or team behaviors to Trek staff. You will receive a yellow safety sash to be worn each day while cycling. This will allow you to be easily identified.

Ham Radio Operators are the main form of communication between route-based volunteers and the finish line during event weekend. You will be providing information and updates on the status of riders, rest stops, and other trek vehicles through your radio. HAM radio operators are placed along the route, at rest stops, and in SAG vehicles with SAG drivers. If you are at a rest stop location, you will remain at the rest stop from when it opens until it closes each day. You will receive more scheduling and assignment information from your lead volunteer and Trek staff before event weekend.

A Goodwill Ambassador’s role is to ride and keep an eye out for other riders who may be in distress and require assistance in calling for medical help, i.e., an ambulance. In this role, you will assist if another cyclist is in distress, in terms of supplying band-aids and other basic first aid, as well as assisting in calling emergency medical assistance if needed. You will receive a yellow safety sash to be worn each day, allowing you to be identified easily.
